You look around and realize there are full shopping carts everywhere, and no owners to be found.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s your first thought?<\/strong> Restocking time at Target? A prank? The rapture?<\/p>\n<p>More than likely, you wouldn\u2019t think everyone just filled their baskets and changed their minds. That\u2019s absurd!<\/p>\n<p>Luckily for the brick and mortar guys, cart abandonment is not a big issue. If it were, they wouldn\u2019t be able to keep the doors open. Unfortunately for us on the ecommerce side, about 70% of the folks that put something in their shopping cart don\u2019t finish checking out.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>The nerve!!! But wait a second&#8230;<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Let\u2019s not be too hard on these cart abandoning, flip-flopping, indecisive no-good shoppers.<\/p>\n<p>Chances are, you\u2019re one of them (I know I am). And here\u2019s why\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Online cart abandonment is just a part of human nature. Consumers want to make sure they know what they\u2019re buying, they\u2019re getting it at a fair price, they\u2019ll receive it in a timely manner and there aren\u2019t any unexpected costs.<\/p>\n<p>Abandoning an online shopping cart is actually more like walking an item to the self-scanner at Target to check the price, deciding you don\u2019t want it and placing it back on the shelf.<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"a3ic\" data-offset-key=\"7tlhf-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"7tlhf-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"7tlhf-0-0\">When you think about it that way, that careless abandoner is actually a potential buyer. Take off your rose colored glasses, be as picky as possible and try to see it through the eyes of a shopper. <\/i><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<h5><b> Unexpected Costs &#8211; Bad<\/b><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>A whopping 56% of customers decide against a purchase because the cost is not what they were expecting! Are you up-front about all costs associated with the purchase of your items? Is the shipping cost disproportionately large, considering the cost of the item? Make sure all costs <\/span><\/span><span class=\"passivevoice\"><span data-offset-key=\"6ajnh-1-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">are disclosed<\/span><\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"6ajnh-2-0\"><span data-text=\"true\"> and there\u2019s no way a customer could <\/span><\/span><span class=\"passivevoice\"><span data-offset-key=\"6ajnh-3-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">be hit<\/span><\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"6ajnh-4-0\"><span data-text=\"true\"> with an unexpected cost.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-unorderedListItem public-DraftStyleDefault-reset public-DraftStyleDefault-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-listLTR\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"a3ic\" data-offset-key=\"95ckm-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"95ckm-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"95ckm-0-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">Add each item to your cart <\/span><\/span><span class=\"adverb\"><span data-offset-key=\"95ckm-1-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">separately<\/span><\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"95ckm-2-0\"><span data-text=\"true\"> and keep only one item in your cart at a time. Note any possible costs that could <\/span><\/span><span class=\"passivevoice\"><span data-offset-key=\"95ckm-3-0\"><span data-text=\"true\">be perceived<\/span><\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"95ckm-4-0\"><span data-text=\"true\"> as too high or unnecessary. i.e. Sales tax, high shipping costs, service fees, etc.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>Fix what you find!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>\n<h5><b> Just Browsing &#8211; Good<\/b><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Like I said, cart abandonment is part of human nature. How many times have you been on Amazon and filled your cart just to see what the total would come to? Or how often do you put something in your cart to return later and purchase?<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"duoh6-0-0\">As cell phones and social media continue to contribute to consumers\u2019 already short attention span, and millennials continue to become more indecisive and less committal, shoppers who are \u201c<\/span><\/span><span class=\"qualifier\"><span data-offset-key=\"duoh6-1-0\">just<\/span><\/span><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"duoh6-2-0\"> browsing\u201d will continue to increase <\/span><\/span><span class=\"adverb\"><span data-offset-key=\"duoh6-3-0\">exponentially<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"duoh6-4-0\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"a3ic\" data-offset-key=\"duoh6-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"duoh6-0-0\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"duoh6-0-0\">Don\u2019t freak out, though\u2026 This is a good thing! (I\u2019ll explain later)<\/div>\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"duoh6-0-0\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li>\n<h5><b> Found a Better Price Elsewhere or Overall Price Was Too Expensive &#8211; Bad<\/b><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"a3ic\" data-offset-key=\"46u2k-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"46u2k-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"46u2k-0-0\">When was the last time you conducted a market analysis to check how <\/span><span class=\"adverb\"><span data-offset-key=\"46u2k-1-0\">competitively<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"46u2k-2-0\"> you\u2019re priced? <\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"46u2k-3-0\">Many store owners find a good price point that fits the market well at the time, but never update it based on market conditions<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"46u2k-4-0\">. <\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"46u2k-0-0\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"a3ic\" data-offset-key=\"84uvq-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"84uvq-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"84uvq-0-0\">Some companies that sell higher quality products at a higher price point have this issue. If this is you, how are you articulating the value of your product over the competition?<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Your task:<\/p>\n<p>Conduct market and competitor analyses to see how you stack up. Google your competitors. Add their products to your cart and review their checkout process. Look up reviews on your competitors\u2019 products. Here are some questions to ask yourself in the process:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What features is my product lacking, compared to others?<\/li>\n<li>What features does my product have that others don\u2019t?<\/li>\n<li>Am I clearly articulating the value that my product provides over the competitor?<\/li>\n<li>What affect would it have on my bottom line or my Customer Acquisition Cost to lower my price to match competitors?<\/li>\n<li>What kind of discount or coupon might I be willing to provide to get a customer to buy my product over the competitor? (keep this one handy\u2026 we\u2019ll come back to it)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li>\n<h5><b> Decided Against Buying &#8211; Good<\/b><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Again\u2026 Human nature. We change our minds all the time and no amount of site optimization or market analysis will stop this from happening.<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"a3ic\" data-offset-key=\"4rd75-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"4rd75-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"4rd75-0-0\">Here\u2019s the thing, though. <\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"4rd75-1-0\">Consumers also have a tendency to <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/web_staging_fern.staging.cartstack.com\/blog\/5-irresistible-ways-to-incentivize-your-cart-abandonment-emails\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-offset-key=\"4rd75-2-0\">change their mind<\/span><\/a><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"4rd75-3-0\"> AGAIN when presented with a better option<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"4rd75-4-0\">. That makes this reason for cart abandonment another \u201cgood\u201d one.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li>\n<h5><b> Complicated Website &#8211; Bad<\/b><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Reducing the \u201cbarriers to entry\u201d for your customers to purchase items as easily as possible is imperative to increasing your conversion and reducing abandoned carts. These barriers can include a complicated site design, too many form fields on your checkout page, non-smart forms, forcing a customer to register before they can check out, and much more.<\/p>\n<p>Your task:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Walk through the checkout process on your site and note every single possible barrier that could keep someone from completing a checkout. For example:\n<ul>\n<li>Too many form fields<\/li>\n<li>A Confusing cart layout<\/li>\n<li>Non-user friendly site design<\/li>\n<li>Cart is not optimized for mobile<\/li>\n<li>\u201cSubmit\u201d button doesn\u2019t stand out<\/li>\n<li>Unnecessary *required fields<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Figure out what is important to you. Are you collecting data you don\u2019t need (phone number, etc)? If you\u2019re forcing account registration, what is the purpose? Are these things more important to your company than making a sale?<\/li>\n<li>Use a tool like VWO or Optimizely to split test different versions of your page and optimize it for conversion. These tools allow you to add and remove form fields, change button colors, adjust copy, make layout and design changes with ease, and much more.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Remember\u2026<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cA Confused or Overwhelmed Mind Doesn\u2019t Buy\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2><b>Out With The Bad and In With The Good<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>So, looking at the data, here\u2019s one thing we know\u2026<\/p>\n<p>As e-commerce store owners, most of the time, <strong>cart abandonment is OUR fault<\/strong>. 3 out of 5 times, actually.<\/p>\n<p>But enough about the bad news. Let\u2019s move onto the good news! <span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"6duor-0-0\">We have a unique opportunity that the brick and mortar guys could only dream of<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"6duor-1-0\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"a3ic\" data-offset-key=\"6duor-0-0\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"a3ic\" data-offset-key=\"1kr5k-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"1kr5k-0-0\"><strong>We can <span class=\"adverb\">easily<\/span> reach the shoppers that were <span class=\"qualifier\">just<\/span><\/strong><span data-offset-key=\"1kr5k-4-0\"><strong> browsing or changed their minds!<\/strong> This is actually one of the reasons e-commerce is killing traditional retail sales.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"a3ic\" data-offset-key=\"3msgk-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"3msgk-0-0\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"3msgk-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"3msgk-0-0\">There are <\/span><span data-offset-key=\"3msgk-0-1\">2 main tools<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"3msgk-0-2\"> that you can use to recover these lost sales, each with their own effectiveness and costs.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"3msgk-0-0\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h4><strong>1.
